Bach signs plaques commemorating the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake

International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach joined Tokyo 2020 President Seiko Hashimoto to sign memorial plaques at the Tokyo Recovery Monument commemorating the devastation caused by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake in Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima.

“The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games is a symbol of resilience,” Bach said.

“They have been honored in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake to be toys for recovery and reconstruction.

“These games are a symbol of the resilience we enjoy when we unite in solidarity.

“They are proof that we are always stronger together.”

In a short ceremony attended also by the memorial designers Tsukushi Oka and Shione Fukui, Bach received messages of goodwill from schoolchildren in the affected prefectures, who suggested what the monuments should look like when participating in the special sessions held in their schools.

Monuments include messages from provinces and competing athletes.

The height of the three monuments is more than two meters.

It’s made from recycled aluminum used for emergency windows in the aftermath of the tsunami and earthquake.

Tokyo 2020 said it was “designed as a project linking the world and regions hit by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and devastating tsunami, providing support for disaster recovery.”

The project was organized by Tokyo 2020, in collaboration with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Tokyo University of the Arts (Geidai), the affected prefectures and the Games sponsoring Lixil Corporation.

The relics are currently installed in front of the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery in Tokyo but will later be moved to permanent sites in the three prefectures.
