Recent earthquakes shake some Peabody residents: Patch PM
PEABODY, MA – It’s Thursday, August 5th. Here’s what you should know this afternoon:
The second quake in two weeks gives another tremor for some Peabody residents who have felt their share of the tremor and tremors in recent months, and the trial of the two men accused in the 2016 death of Toxbury boy Ethan Costello is set to begin August 9. But more delays may come, as a former official with the Worcester Office of Housing Development faces a long federal prison sentence after being convicted on fraud charges this week, according to federal prosecutors.

There has been a lot of movement and shaking in Peabody lately and some residents have worried a little more.
For the second time in two weeks, the city recorded a small earthquake on Wednesday with the US Geological Survey citing a magnitude 1.2 event around 6:45 p.m., as did a magnitude 1.4 earthquake last weekend.
The city has dealt with several unexplained tremors in recent months, including one episode this winter when residents reported a thunderous thump they said shook homes and sounded like explosions.
The father of the bride told WHDH-TV that he came down to investigate the noise but didn’t realize someone had broken in until the next day. The newlyweds would store gifts in the bride’s parents’ house, where they planned to live once married.

Police said a break-in was reported on August 2 at 200th Street on Broadway. Police said one of the suspects appeared to be wearing a fedora-style hat. Surveillance photos show another person interacting with the man on the porch of the house.

Trial set to begin 5 years after teen’s death: The trial of the two men accused in the death of Tewksbury boy Ethan Costello is set to begin on August 9, but further delays could come, the Middlesex District Attorney’s office said. Joseph Zagarella is charged with manslaughter and Joseph Ogden is accused of serving alcohol to minors at a Halloween party in October 2016 where prosecutors said Zagarella hit Costello with a concrete floor. The trial was initially scheduled to begin in November 2018 but has passed years of delays, including a government medical examination report that took nearly a year.
Ex-official guilty of widespread fraud: A former official at Worcester’s Office of Housing Development is facing a lengthy federal prison sentence after being found guilty of fraud this week, according to federal prosecutors. This week a jury found Jacqueline Sutgivni, 47, of Dracott, guilty of conspiracy to commit internet fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to defraud the federal government and false allegations. According to prosecutors, she helped funnel millions of federal funds into a developer Natick to work on a multi-family property that never happened. That developer, James Levine, pleaded guilty in September 2020 and was sentenced in March to three years in federal prison, three years of supervised release, and forfeiture of nearly $2 million.
Pleading guilty to coworker deaths: A Braintree construction worker has pleaded guilty to aggravated assault that resulted in the death of his Wilmington co-worker and friend, according to Maine prosecutors. The Associated Press reports that Robert Clark, 35, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison. Clark was originally charged with manslaughter, but the Maine District Attorney’s Office agreed to dismiss the charge as part of an agreement with Clark’s attorneys. Clark was facing a possible 10-year prison sentence before the deal.

Arnold, a Canadian goose, underwent surgery last month, after staff found him in pain in a pond near the Cape Wildlife Center. The center usually does not allow sick visitors, but the staff made a heartening exception. The exception was because Arnold’s longtime companion Amelia stood outside the window of the animal hospital and refused to leave until she knew her partner was safe. they said that

Nathan Sabo, a neighborhood activist in Worcester, in his complaint to the Massachusetts Attorney General against a Worcester police officer. Sabo claims the cop scolded him after Sunday’s game at the Worcester Red Sox.
