At least 227 killed, many injured in 7.2-magnitude earthquake in Haiti, World News reports

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on Saturday, killing at least 227 people and injuring many more across the country, and raising fears of a tsunami.

Video footage from the country showed several buildings toppled by the powerful earthquake as people rushed to seek shelter.

The epicenter of this powerful earthquake was about 100 miles (160 kilometers) from the center of the densely populated capital, Port-au-Prince.

The US Geological Survey issued a tsunami warning immediately after the earthquake. Experts have calculated the possibility of waves up to three meters (about 10 feet) along the coast of Haiti. While the warning has now reportedly been lifted, locals have been asked to exercise caution.

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden has agreed to provide immediate aid to the grieving nation. “The president authorized an immediate US response, and appointed USAID Administrator Samantha Power … to coordinate this effort,” a senior White House official said.

Saturday’s earthquake reminded people of the 2010s that killed thousands, flattened several buildings, and left the country struggling economically for years.

This earthquake also came shortly after the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise, who was shot dead in his home. His assassination plunged the country into a political crisis, as the country was already struggling to control the coronavirus pandemic.
