Samaritan’s Purse Helps Haiti earthquake victims as death toll passes 700

Greensboro, NC (WGHP) – The death toll from the earthquake that struck Haiti over the weekend passed 1,200 on Sunday, and workers with Samaritan’s Purse exited Piedmont Triad International Airport to deliver aid.

The plane took off with 13 specialists and 31 tons of supplies, including food, materials for shelter, and two water purification systems.

A medical team will also make the trip in the coming days.

Saturday’s earthquake left at least 1,297 dead and 2,800 injured in the Caribbean island nation, with thousands more displaced from their destroyed or damaged homes. In some areas, survivors were forced to take shelter in the streets or soccer fields with the few belongings they could salvage from their homes.

However, the devastation could soon worsen with Tropical Storm Grace, which was expected to arrive in Haiti late Monday or early Tuesday, bringing the potential for heavy rain, flooding and landslides.

The US National Hurricane Center forecast 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 cm) of rain in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, with up to 15 inches in some southern parts of the island they share.

The earthquake hit the southwestern part of the poorest country in the hemisphere, nearly destroying some towns and causing landslides that hampered rescue efforts.

The disaster added to the plight of Haitians already suffering from the coronavirus pandemic, a presidential assassination and a wave of gang violence.

The US Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was 125 km west of the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Aftershocks continued to hit the area on Sunday.
