An overview of the impact of crises

• A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck southwest Haiti on August 14 at 8:30 am local time. The quake occurred 13 km southeast of Petite-Trues-de-Nieps in the province of Nieps, 125 km west of the capital, Port-au-Prince. It occurred at a depth of 10 km and was followed by a number of aftershocks – the strongest of which was 5.2 (CDEMA 14/08/2021; USGS 14/08/2021c; independent access 08/14/2021).

• At least 60,000 people have been affected, about 1,300 people have died, and more than 5,000 have been injured as of August 16. The death toll is expected to rise as the search continues for victims trapped under the rubble. The government has declared a month-long state of emergency in the hardest-hit counties (ACTalliance 16/08/2021).

• The most affected areas are in the counties of Sud, Nippes and Grandv’Anse. The provinces of Jeremy (Grand Anse province) and Les Cayes (Southern Province) recorded the most damage to infrastructure (Le Temps 15/08/2021; Europe 1 15/08/2021; Government of Haiti 8/14/2021a).

• About 7,370 homes were destroyed and 4,850 homes were destroyed in Sud, Nippes and Grand’Anse counties, leaving thousands of people homeless (CDEMA 15/08/2021; OCHA 15/08/2021; Le Monde 15/08/2021). Damage to public buildings, including hospitals and schools, has been reported. Hospitals that are still operating are overcrowded and likely to lack the medicines and equipment needed to treat all patients (AP 15/08/2021).
