Colorado Foundation helps Haiti earthquake survivors

On Saturday, Haiti was hit by a 7.2-magnitude earthquake, killing at least 1,400 people and injuring thousands more.

Colorado, USA – The Colorado Group that has helped the island of Haiti for 31 years looks forward to providing support in the wake of the recent disaster.

On Saturday, Haiti was hit by a 7.2-magnitude earthquake that killed at least 1,400 people and injured thousands more, and a local organization “Haiti Locally” that helps people in Haiti is now working to change its priorities.

“The acute short-term challenge is literally a roof over people’s heads,” said Wayne Walint, Executive Director of Locale Haiti.

“This is a combination of fabrics, tents and metal roofing just so people are literally covered and have some basic shelter.”

Destruction is no stranger to Walnet. Coloradan traveled to Haiti in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake and spent two and a half years there helping to rebuild. Since then, he has dedicated his time to Local Haiti, providing educational opportunities to rural communities.

The area covered by the nonprofit is Petit Trou. Walnet told 9News that Betty True is about five miles from the epicenter of the last earthquake.

“The leaders are afraid and the leaders are worried,” Walnut explained. “Leaders are outside sleeping with their families and talking to the kids and trying to help them make sense of this moment and again trying to do the next right thing, see what can be done and make small progress, and hopefully through access to the resources we can be a bridge to.”

Walnut hopes that Coloradans will financially support the organization’s efforts to help Haitians obtain essential items. He told 9News that 100% of the proceeds raised in the states will go to Petit Trou.
