Cedar Rapids, a Haitian woman organizing efforts to help earthquake victims

Cedar Rapids, Iowa (KCRG) – A Haitian woman from Cedar Rapids heard directly from her family about the current situation there and is making her own efforts to help.

Esther Pascal says she was devastated after hearing the news of the 7.2 earthquake this weekend. Then, the effects of Tropical Storm blessing immediately afterwards.

“Why are all these things happening in Haiti?” Pascal said. “I cried. It is killing me inside. In 2010, we had a big earthquake. In 2021, our president was killed, and we are dealing with COVID-19.”

This has led to a shortage of hospital rooms and medical supplies, Pascal said. It’s something her father-in-law is fighting over there.

“His dad doesn’t feel much better, and they tried to go to the hospital, but basically all the hospitals are full,” Pascal said.

Pascal said communication is difficult. The only family I spoke to was her niece who takes care of her father-in-law.

“I wanted to help go and help, but because of security and a lot of killings, I’m afraid to go,” Pascal said.

However, Pascal and her husband make the trip in the second week of September. In the meantime, they plan to collect donations to send in advance.

“Right now, the biggest needs are medical supplies, such as intravenous injections, syringes, water, and food,” Pascal said.

Pascal works with local businesses and hospitals, including UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s Hospital where she works, to put donation boxes where people can hand things over.

It is the first time that efforts have been organized for a disaster of this magnitude. However, she tries to give back every year.

“I send big things to Haiti for my aunt to give to the churches,” Pascal said.

Pascal said she does this because she knows firsthand even before the earthquake that people in Haiti are suffering.

“This motivates me to help those in need, like children who need to go to school. I help them. People who need a place to stay, I can pay six months’ rent for them,” Pascal said.
