10 years later: Louisa community reflects on 5.8-magnitude earthquake

Louisa County, Virginia (WRIC) – August 23, 2021 marks ten years since the 5.8-magnitude earthquake that shook the East Coast and destroyed buildings, businesses and homes.

A 2015 report by the US Geological Survey stated that the August 2011 earthquake was probably the most widespread in US history.

The event was being felt from Central Virginia through the capital, New England, and even parts of Canada. Louisa High School and an elementary school were destroyed.

Former Louisa County employees, county leaders and first responders came together Monday at Louisa County High School grades to reflect ten years later.

“The earthquake damaged other buildings, other schools, many businesses and many homes in our community,” LCPS Director Doug Straley said, addressing the crowd. “But what he hasn’t destroyed is our community.”

Candance Wilkerson was the principal of Thomas Jefferson Elementary School when the earthquake struck. It was her first year as a manager.

She said, “I was on the phone with my grandfather, and I remember we were talking, and then I said, ‘My pictures are dropping.

The elementary school was destroyed, but she said community leaders helped them rebuild the school and lives.

“Just wanting to listen to the community. Just to make sure the community feels heard and feels safe… This is just a big memory for me,” she told 8News.

Alexis Downey was a second grader at Louisa High School when the earthquake struck. She remembers she was out for vacation.

“When the ground started shaking, I fell off the swings,” she recalls.

Downey said it was a team effort to gather the students and eventually return them to the classroom. The district has set up standard trails for students.

“We were back to school in less than a month – I think it was two or three weeks,” she said. “I don’t think any other society would have been able to do that.”

Leaders planted a “Tree of Hope” outside Louisa High School to honor the heroes who helped on August 23, 2011.
