Kilauea volcano warning as swarm of small earthquakes hits area | News

The U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has raised its volcano alert status from alert to view Kīlauea volcano after increased earthquake activity under the southern portion of Colawea Peak inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, according to a U.S. Geological Survey release.

More than 140 earthquakes were recorded by 4:30 a.m. (10:30 a.m. ET), the largest with a magnitude of 3.3. The statement added that most of the earthquakes were less than 1 on the Richter scale, but small earthquakes continue at a rate of at least 10 earthquakes per hour.

The aviation color code has also increased from yellow to orange, although the USGS says no smoke cloud has formed.

In December, the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency asked residents to stay indoors after the Kilauea volcano erupted following a series of earthquakes.
