Operation Pool teams continue to assist Haiti earthquake victims; Focus on medical care and clean water

Virginia Beach, VA (Wavy) – Nearly two weeks after the major earthquake that hit Haiti and killed thousands of people, recovery efforts are still underway.

More than 2,200 people died after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake on August 14.

Virginia Beach-based Operation Grace dispatched a disaster relief team last week.

“You can’t imagine when you go into a house and you’re told that three people in the same family have died,” said Emmanuela Delsoin, National Director of Operation Grace Haiti.

Days later, Tropical Storm Grace hit, causing mudslides and flooding.

It is devastating to the people of Haiti.

“In Haiti, we have a lot of bad situations,” Delsoin said.

Her team left Port-au-Prince and headed south just a day after the earthquake.

“So far we have distributed about 300 kits and kits that we provide, and they have food and hygiene items to cover for a week for a family of five,” Delsoin said.

Their business continues to expand.

“We have a team doing medical brigades in remote areas for these people, because hospitals are now collapsing and taking in more patients than usual, which is why there is a huge need for medical brigades,” Delsoin said.

She says the work is hard but it is worth it.

“So it’s raining and the residents, they don’t have a roof to stay in and so far, we can’t provide tents and that’s a feeling of helplessness,” Delsoin said.

For Delsoin, these feelings and images are nothing new. She is from Haiti and lives in Port-au-Prince in 2010 when the capital was hit by an earthquake.

“I seem to remember all the feelings and when I got to the floor, it was absolutely horrible,” Delsoin said.

The team plans to stay until September 15, but will help for as long as needed.

COVID-19 is another challenge they are dealing with. There isn’t much room for people to stay away. Operation Blessing teams have oxygen and other supplies to help COVID-19 clinics.
