A recent project by the McCarthy Building Companies and design engineer NBBJ is the first building in the world to use base isolators over springs to absorb ground motion during an earthquake. The newly completed Loma Linda University Medical Center is the largest hospital project in California by square footage and located near major earthquake faults. To ensure the 16-story medical center met strict California seismic standards, the companies placed the structure over 126 core insulators, each weighing nearly 10 tons and designed to help keep the building as stable as possible.

According to the California Department of Prefecture, two to three earthquakes occur each year within the state that are large enough to cause moderate damage to building structures.

“Typically, earthquake upgrades are done on older buildings with high perishability and stability problems,” Roy Anderson, Vice President of Earthquake Risk Services at AEI Consultants, told GlobeSt in a previous interview. This includes timber frame properties (aka soft story) with parking under tuck, moment-resistant (pre-Northridge) steel frame properties built prior to 1997, moment-resistant non-ductile concrete buildings built prior to 1976, and tilt Concrete buildings constructed before the 1994 Northridge earthquake, and precast and unreinforced masonry buildings constructed prior to 1934.

But incorporating new design concepts for earthquake mitigation is just as important as retrofits, which have long been on the minds of California lawmakers.

“If a major earthquake hit California again and was in any of the most populous cities, the damage would be catastrophic,” says Stephen Steckler, president of the Sentry Claims Group. “Residents and their insurance companies would be overwhelmed by the sheer volume and depth of claims.
