A Colorado doctor shares his experience treating Haiti earthquake victims

AURORA, Colorado (KDVR) – Dr. Eric Hill has returned to Colorado after treating earthquake victims in Haiti. Hill, an Army veteran, medical director and emergency physician at Aurora Medical Center, knows how to put his diverse skill set to work as a member of Team Rubicon.

Moments after the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti in August, Hill was busy planning to travel there.

“It is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere,” Hill said as he recalled his experience during a conversation with Michael Konopasic of FOX31.

Doctors at Aurora Medical Center covered Hill during his absence. He was part of a small group of volunteers who are assessing places where there is an urgent need.

Their journey took them to a community called Les Cayes where they sought help from a local priest who had housed the team at his compound. Hill then moved from one hospital to another in the severely affected area.

“We were by far the first American medical team, or any kind of medical team, to do that,” Hill said.

The team worked long hours in the heat and humidity.

“[We saw] “Very devastating fractures and dislocations,” Hill said. Lots of big wounds.

Among the patients with excruciating pain are children.

“I’m a father of three, and that just broke my heart,” Hill said as he got emotional.

Resources are tight, Hill said, and operating theaters were either destroyed or were at full capacity. He was forced to improvise in various ways and treat injuries with little or no painkillers. He spent a total of nine days in the country and only left as more help arrived.

“It sets the record straight for what we’re dealing with here in America,” Hill said. “Yes, we have long waiting times now. Yes, the healthcare system is overwhelmed. But nothing like what [the Haitians] expertise.”

Hill said the whole experience rekindled his belief in medicine and his passion for his job at a time when many medical workers are suffering from COVID-19 fatigue.
