This morning, there were reports on social media of an earthquake in Sebastian, Florida. There was a map of Florida Today showing an earthquake in Florida, but we can’t find anything.

One person posted on Facebook “At 1:51 am there was a minor earthquake in Sebastian.” The post has been shared many times and now people think the earth shook in Sebastian City.

Then we did a USGS search, and couldn’t find anything. Their maps show a major earthquake in Mexico and a minor tremor off the coast of Jacksonville, but we were unable to locate an actual earthquake.

Earthquakes in Sebastian are rare, not to mention Florida. We’re not saying Sebastian didn’t have an earthquake, but we can’t find any evidence from the USGS.

Earthquake or boom?

In February, people reported feeling a boom from the ground, followed by a light in the sky. People later found out that it was a missile test from a submarine off the coast of Florida.

Two months later, people heard another loud bang, and for some it felt like a minor earthquake. It was also another military test in the Atlantic.

Some Richter scales can detect these military tests as earthquakes. We’re not suggesting this happened last night, but we can’t find any evidence other than some maps from Florida today. Again, the USGS has not reported any earthquake.

Sebastian Daily contacted the US Geological Survey to confirm whether or not there was an earthquake. We are also communicating with the military to determine if they have conducted another test in the Atlantic.

We’ll update everyone if we find out that it was indeed an earthquake. But, at the moment, there is no evidence of one of them being in Sebastian, Florida.
