Twenty years ago, on September 11, 2001, Al-Qaeda launched four coordinated attacks in the United States, lasting one hour and seventeen minutes. The world saw nineteen terrorists drop four planes – two at the World Trade Center, one at the Pentagon, the same symbol of American strength, and a fourth at a Pennsylvania field. To this day, the 9/11 attacks by Al-Qaeda remain the deadliest attack in history. The courage of the attack was so moving. In just over an hour, the idea that the United States – the leader of the free world – could prove to be completely vulnerable, not invincible. That bleak day has undoubtedly had an impact on the American psyche to this day, America’s place in the world and the way we view America.
