“I thought we were having an earthquake.” Cannabis dispensary collapses overnight

DETROIT (WXYZ) – A cannabis dispensary in southwest Detroit is in ruins after some kind of explosion caused the building to collapse.

Fortunately, all the staff inside managed to get out in time and no one was hurt.

The Department of Public Works says the streets adjacent to W. Fort in Miller, W. Fort at Woodmere, Dearborn at Riverside, and Dearborn at Stone are closed until further notice.

Currently, DTE is repairing the electrical infrastructure that was affected by the major water outage. Officials say at this point that there is no evidence to suggest that this accident was caused by natural gas.

“I think we’re having an earthquake, to be honest,” said Mario Seaman, owner of Stash Detroit.

When he heard crackling and hissing sounds from inside his company, something said to Seaman that he needed to get everyone out.

“I got out and everything was fine – I just saw the building rising from the ground and I’m just glad everyone is fine,” Seaman said.

It only took 10 minutes, Seaman says, for the devastation to unfold; Bricks falling off the side of the building and now a big hole next door.

General Manager Nick Thomas says the smell of gas has been in the area for the past three months and has been reported to DTE.

“They’ve come five or six times and said it’s either fixed or it’s not a major priority,” Thomas said.

The investigation into what happened is a joint effort between the City of Detroit, the Great Lakes Water Authority and DTE.

The fire official is now focusing on demolition so the rest of the building doesn’t collapse onto the sidewalk or utility lines.

“We redesigned the building, and everything was safe and sound, so we don’t — we have no idea how that could have happened,” Seaman said.

All Stash Detroit products and supplies were destroyed in the crash.

Thanks to the insurance, Thomas says they’ll be back in customer service in no time.

Thomas said, “It’s not really about the product, it’s about the people out there, I can replace the product. I can’t replace the staff I work for.”

Stash Detroit is already looking for another site to build a store.

We don’t know yet when the building will collapse. The accident is still under investigation.
