An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the west of Nevada struck early Friday morning and felt the way to Lake Tahoe.

Some residents reported feeling the tremor lasting several seconds before it ended.

The U.S. Geological Service reported the tremor at 4:03 am and said it was about 35 miles outside Tonoba, just east of Sierra and about 4 hours southeast of Tahoe.

The initial earthquake struck about 4.7 miles deep, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, followed by at least six major aftershocks, all of them 4.5 or higher.

People tweeted that they felt shaken all the way to Salt Lake City, Utah and Central California Valley.

The first four aftershocks were nine minutes away. The last 30 aftershocks were recorded at 6 am and have a magnitude of 4.2.
