Missouri-wide ‘ShakeOut’ earthquake training set for October 21

Registration for the 2021 Central American Earthquake “ShakeOut” exercise opened on October 21, 2021. More than 320,000 people have already registered for this year’s ShakeOut exercise, which is designed to remind people how to protect themselves during an earthquake. Missouri is one of the 14 participating central US states that could be affected by the New Madrid earthquake zone earthquake.

“The devastating earthquake in Haiti that left more than 50,000 homeless last month is a reminder of the devastating power of catastrophic earthquakes and that earthquakes strike without warning,” said SEMA Director Jim Remmillard. “Being prepared before an earthquake of any size is critical to staying safe. Participating in ShakeOut and practicing now prepares children and adults alike for what to do when shaking begins.”

At 10:21 a.m. on Thursday, October 21, participants will practice the “Drop, Cover, Hold On” technique:

Fall on your hands and knees. Cover your head and neck with your hands and arms under a table or desk if you can; Continue until shaking stops.

Studies show that in developed countries with modern structures, falling debris is the most common source of earthquake injuries. Experts advise that when an earthquake occurs in the United States, “drop, cover and hang” technology is the best way to protect yourself and others from falling debris.
