A small earthquake rocks southeastern Colorado, sending shock waves to neighboring states | local news

A 3.8-magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Colorado early Monday morning, the US Geological Survey said.

The earthquake occurred at 3:27 a.m. around 3:27 a.m. GMT, with the epicenter 5 miles northwest of Pritchett, which is 265 miles southeast of Denver and more than 100 miles east of Trinidad.

Earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 to 5.4 are usually felt, but generally do not cause significant damage. Structural damage tends to start in the intensity range of 5.5 to 6.0 degrees.

There were no reports of damage or injuries as of Monday morning. According to the earthquake mapping, the radius of the shock wave extended to neighboring countries.

There were about 25 reports on the USGS website of people feeling the quake, including a “mild shaking” near the epicenter. The earthquake was reported to be felt in Lamar and Rocky Ford.

Some Pritchett residents said they felt the effects of the quake including Amanda Saunders, the Pritchett School District’s business manager. When she woke up Monday morning, Saunders said, the picture frames hanging on her walls were crooked.

Saunders said one of her colleagues woke up when her water bed started moving.

“It was a mixed bag,” Saunders said when it came to feeling the effects of the earthquake.

This is the only earthquake measuring 2.5 on the Richter scale that occurred in Colorado last month. Five additional earthquakes in the 1.0 to 2.0 magnitude range occurred in that period.
