An earthquake measuring 5.7 degrees south of the Philippine capital, Manila.

The deep quake hit Batangas province of Luzon island at 1:12 am (17:12 GMT), awakening residents of the neighboring capital Manila from the shaking of their buildings.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake occurred at a depth of 74 kilometers (46 miles).

The epicenter of the earthquake was in Occidental Mindoro Province.

Authorities close to the epicenter said they had not received any reports of damage.

“It was really strong,” said Jose Clyde Yayoung, a disaster officer in Tagaytay City in neighboring Cavite County. “So far there have been no untoward incidents related to the earthquake.”

Leonardo Tristan, a disaster management officer in Luke, Occidental Mindoro, said the strength of the quake sent some residents out quickly.

“My wife was screaming ‘There is an earthquake,'” Tristan told AFP.

The Philippines is regularly exposed to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of intense seismic activity that extends from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific Basin.
