A favorite biblical story is found in 1 Kings 18 and 19. There we read how the Prophet Elijah confronted Ahab and Jezebel with a challenge proving God’s power on and against their pagan paths. After proving his point, Elijah fears for his life and escapes to hide in a cave. After a while, an angel comes and pulls him from the cave, at which point he is endowed with a vision, 1 Kings 19: 11-12:

“And, behold, the Lord has passed. There was a great and mighty wind, the mountains are divided and the rocks are broken by the power of the Lord. But the Lord was not blowing the wind. After the wind – an earthquake. But the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake – a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire After the fire – a soft grumbling sound (“Small voice still”).

And that was the “soft voice of grumbling” (that “voice that is still small”) that Elijah heard as he woke up from the depths of his soul that he had found God, the reason he left the cave to continue his mission.

This story is meaningful to me because it provides us with a powerful lesson on how, in the midst of the current challenge we face, we can not only live, but prosper.

Although our situation is different, it is the same. We do not need to look far to see how everything we believed in and the way we lived was in question. Like Elijah, we did what we were told was true and good. We weren’t perfect, but we know we did our best. This is what we get?
