The teenager who lost all video games in 3/11, Rafik, wins the app award: The Asahi Shimbun

KESENNUMA, Miyagi Prefecture – The precious video games of Eigo Hatakeyama were eliminated when the tsunami triggered by the 2011 East Japan Earthquake destroyed this city and damaged his family’s home.

But the loss caused by the disaster when Hatakeyama, now 18, was a second grade student in elementary school, soon pushed him to start creating programs in his spare time.

His dedication to game development paid off in March of this year when the role-playing video game app for smartphones by third-year Kesennuma High School student and fellow Takuma Yoshiki, 17, won first prize in a national competition for high school students.

“Kesennuma Quest” couple players can practically walk around Kesennuma to shop and chat with real residents and people at physical stores in the cloned city. Avatars of the players interact in a personal fashion outfit based on Asked Cities.

“I thought that if I played a game in which people who left Kisnuma could see the faces of the locals they knew, it would motivate them to return to their hometown,” Hatakeyama said.

Realizing that his hometown was in serious decline, he first hit Hatakeyama in high school, as he began thinking about ways to attract people to the city to prevent its residents from shrinking.

He concluded that instead of holding temporary events, the best way to revive Kesennuma would be by creating something permanent that stuck in people’s minds.

Although Hatakeyama developed the original “Kesennuma Quest” in the summer of 2018, he had trouble tuning the app alone and switched to Yoshiki, the regular video game partner, to try the program to learn how to improve it.

Yoshiki, like Hatakeama, has been an active player since he was a child. Although Yoshki was unable to play video games for a while in the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake, he was fully absorbed later, which helped the two to become friends.

One of Yoshiki’s quirks with “Kesennuma Quest” characters was moving very slowly.

After making multiple adjustments, Hatakeyama and Yoshiki revealed their invention in the My Project Award competition, as high school students offer competing ideas on how to solve problems facing communities as part of inquiry-based learning.

My Project Award competition is organized by a steering committee composed of entities including the Tokyo-based non-profit educational organization Katariba.

A total of 1903 schools, 751 individuals and groups submitted proposals in the last competition, which was held for the first time in 2013 in Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture.

After winning the preliminary rounds, 48 teams competed in the final round in March via videoconference because of the new epidemic of the Coronavirus.

The book “Kesennuma Quest” won the Minister of Education Award and the special award given to the participants who were well evaluated by the participating high school students, and was praised by the competition judges as “a symbol of the new learning method”.

“I hope people all over Japan will become a fan of Kesennuma by playing our game,” Hatakeyama said.

Yoshiki had a little more modest expectations.

He said, “I just want the locals to enjoy the game first of all to put a smile on their faces.”

Hatakeyama and Yoshiki also said they have created a version of the Kesennuma Quest card game, which features a local accent in the region, which can be played at events in Kesennuma and on other occasions.
