Kaiapoi again shows resilience in the face of adversity.

Waimakariri Vice Mayor Neville Atkinson says the city’s earthquake experience meant that the wider area was “almost ready” for the effects of the Covid-19 closure.

“The situation around the city is very positive. People look ahead instead of back.

“There is a lot of flexibility in the area as a result of earthquakes, so although it is a completely different pandemic prepared.”

While recovery can take several years, Atkinson says the biggest advantage of this recovery is the lack of infrastructure damage.

“We need to look at recovery not only as a county, but also from a regional point of view as part of the Christchurch and also Canterbury as well, and we also need to consider how Canterbury fit into the New Zealand company.

“None of us will recover on our own. We need each other.”

Along with Covid-19 itself, Atkinson said his biggest concern is the mental health of the population.

“Like anyone I am concerned about what people really think. I am keen to know how people really feel.”

Chris Greengrass, chair of the Kaiapoi-Tuahiwi Community Community, said she was pleased to see the increase in city traffic during the past week.

She hopes to encourage empty shop owners on Williams Street to make them more attractive to attract tenants.

“The entire environment has changed, so it will depend on the mindset of people. Will people go to the malls?

“Places like Kaiapoi and Rangiora may become more attractive places for companies to hire.”

Greengrass also heads All Together Kaiapoi, which was founded as a You Me We Us Kaiapoi project to support community recovery after earthquakes.

She hopes activities will continue in the coming months, even if they are reduced.

While the Kaiapoi Art Gallery and the Fire and Ice Festival have been canceled, All Together Kaiapoi is still planning to install lanterns along Williams Street during the winter for the locals.

The planned earthquake remembrance on September 4 has been postponed, to celebrate its tenth anniversary, until next year, but All Together Kaiapoi still hopes to move forward with the Spring Festival in late September.

“Maybe we will not be able to hold a party in the park,” Greengrass says. “But the previous week we would look at decorating the street and encourage companies to put out window displays.”

Unfortunately, the All Together Kaiapoi section, KYDz, which was scheduled to meet in March, was divided into “back burner until next year”.
