Expert calls for updated contingency plans for Thiva earthquake

A seismologist called on civil and municipal protection authorities on Thursday to update their emergency plans for earthquakes in the wider region of Theva in central Greece, due to the ongoing seismic activity detected in the area.

“The seismic activity in the Theva region has not stopped for four months, and we need to update our planning based on the needs that have arisen in Crete,” the head of the Organization for Seismic Planning and Protection (OASP), Professor Efthimios Likas, said the semi-official Anna-MPA news agency, in A reference to the 5.8-magnitude earthquake that killed one person and injured dozens in eastern Crete earlier this week.

Lekkas said that at the Seismic Risk Assessment Committee meeting, the OASP noted that it is essential for municipalities in the region to have fully updated contingency plans.

“All relevant state agencies must also be prepared so that we do not face all that we faced in the recent earthquake in Crete,” he continued.

The OASP visited schools in Thiva district to provide training on what to do in the event of an earthquake, he said.
