On Thursday, October 1, 1987, at 7:42 am, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Southern California, United States.

The main tremor occurred about three kilometers north of the Whittier Strait, with a depth of 14 kilometers. According to Mercalli Intensity, Whittier felt the earthquake’s level 8 (severe) effects. The event was called the Whittier Narrows earthquake of 1987.

The earthquake was felt by the majority of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, with Mercalli Intensity VI (strong) and VII (very strong) values.

The earthquake was the strongest shock to Los Angeles since the San Fernando earthquake in 1971. The event caused temporary damage to local media and communications. The earthquake also caused a power outage, leaving people stranded in elevators.

The earthquake also damaged many water and gas lines, shattered windows, and collapsed roofs.

Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center has received those injured as a result of the earthquake. In total, the event killed eight people and injured 200 others.

Across Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura counties, more than 1,500 homes were destroyed, and 2,500 more were damaged.

The earthquake also caused more than 1,000 gas leaks, many of which started fires.

After the event, Whittier City opened a 521-acre earthquake recovery redevelopment area to raise recovery funds.
