Whitecaps defender Jungwirth eager to slap ex-Earthquakes teammates | national sport

Vancouver Whitecaps defender Florian Jungwirth eagerly anticipates shattering his former teammates.

However, he doesn’t have any grinding tackle planned for when the San Jose Earthquakes come into town on Saturday. Instead, he is plotting a verbal attack.

“I like to go through my opponents’ minds, I like to talk about trash. Guys know me, they know how I am, but let’s see how they respond,” Jongworth said with a smile.

San Jose replaced the 32-year-old German defender with Vancouver on August 6, and did not come off the bench in a goalless draw between the two sides on August 13.

Now he’s looking to take on one player in particular: veteran COEX striker Chris Wondolofsky, who holds the MLS record with 168 goals during his 18-season career.

“He’s (the greatest of all time) in MLS,” said Jungwirth. “I really hope he (Saturday) starts because I love the guy. We are good friends and he is a great guy and character. … If we run into each other, with all due respect to the legend, I will do my job.”

It’s been a long week for the hats (8-8-10).

After beating FC Dallas 1-0 at home last Saturday, the club traveled to Texas and beat the Houston Dynamo in a goalless draw on Wednesday. Vancouver now sits with just three points from the outside of the field with eight games remaining in the regular season.

After two long rides and a tough game in a hot and humid environment, delivering another solid performance on Saturday is no small feat.

“We have to be completely honest – we didn’t have time to prepare for the match. It’s pure and simple,” said Fani Sartini, the interim Cap coach.

He noted that San Jose (8-10-9) is in a similar situation, having fallen 3-1 to the Seattle Sounders on Wednesday.

“The simple thing is to keep it simple for the player, not make too many changes and keep the same structure that we’ve been working on in the last games and trying to improve constantly, basically,” Sartini said.

The Quakes are located just one point from the “hats of the Western Conference,” making Saturday’s game a crucial match in the elimination race.

Vancouver has eight games in the regular season and is one of six teams six or fewer points between them in the middle of the standings.

“It’s very tight,” goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau said of the table.

“We need to top the week right at home for qualifying. It’s no secret, the locker room knows we need to win games at home and get some points on the road. So (Saturday) is like a final for us and we’re going to handle it that way.”

The 27-year-old Canadian goalkeeper made two different performances for Vancouver over the past week, saving a stoppage-time penalty to keep the win over Dallas and making four saves to score his fifth clean sheet of the season in. Houston just days later.

He was named to the MLS team two weeks in a row, but Crépeau is still focused on the task ahead – securing a playoff position.

“These are the matches I’m training for and I want to help the team get to that level in time, which is the qualifiers. That’s the only important thing,” he said.

Saturday, BC Place

Injury report: White Caps defender Eric Godoy will not play on Saturday as he continues to work his way back from a right foot injury. Striker Lucas Cavallini (knee irritation), Christian Gutierrez (left quadruple strain) and Ranko Veselinovic are all questionable.

Canada call-up: Crepeau and Cavallini have been called up to the Canadian national team for a series of World Cup qualifiers later this month. Team Canada also called up Vancouver defender Derek Cornelius, who is currently on loan to Greek Premier League side Panetolikos FC.

Main field advantage: The Whitecaps have been solid at BC Place this season, scoring 4-1-0 at home since returning to Vancouver in August. The ‘Caps’ team started the season from Sandy, Utah, due to boundary restrictions and went 3-3-2 as the ‘home’ team at Rio Tinto Stadium.
