China: Four killed, 23 injured, 5.0 earthquake injured, Yunnan Province

An earthquake that jolted southwest China on May 18 killed nearly four people and injured 24 others, according to Chinese local media. The shallow tremors struck in the town of Kyawjia late Monday evening and led to the concealment of people in shops as boxes flew off shelves. According to reports, the earthquake struck near Zhaotong City with a magnitude of 5.0.

The Chinese government has reportedly said that about 600 rescue workers have already been sent to the disaster area. The Yunnan government said that firefighters and soldiers from the local division of the People’s Liberation Army were already combing rubble and streets filled with falling tiles and concrete.

Several videos also appeared on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, where residents were seen skipping debris as they left buildings, trying to avoid the rocks that fell on the roads.

China prone to earthquakes

According to international media outlets, China is regularly exposed to earthquakes, especially in the western and southwestern mountainous regions. Last year, it was reported that a strong 6.0 magnitude earthquake in Sichuan Province killed nearly 13 people and injured about 200 people. The earthquake also destroyed a large number of structures. In 2008, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake also left 87,000 people dead and missing.
