October 5, 2021. PC: USGS.

No tsunami expected after a 4.6 earthquake (initial magnitude 4.4) reported at 8:37 p.m. on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 in the southwest rift zone of the Kolawea volcano on the island of Hawaii.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported that “a tsunami is not expected; however, some areas may have experienced shaking”.

The USGS reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 32.6 km, and was located near the following cities:

Pāhala, Hawaii, 9.2 miles WSW Hawaiian Paradise Park, Hawaii, 37.4 miles NEHilo, Hawaii, 40 miles NNEKailua-Kona, Hawaii, 48.7 miles NWHonolulu, Hawaii, 214.9 miles NW

Most of the “feeling reports” were recorded in the first 20 minutes on the USGS website Did You Feel It in Hilo, Volcano and Pāhoa on the island of Hawaii. People felt the earthquake all over the island of Hawaii, and as far away as Honoka. The site received more than 210 reports felt within the first hour of the earthquake.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported that the earthquake was centered about 5 miles north of Pahala, at a depth of 33 km (20 miles).

According to HVO Scientist-in-Charge, Ken Hoon, the earthquake did not have a noticeable impact on the Mauna Loa and Colauya volcanoes. “This earthquake is part of the ongoing seismic swarm under the Pāhala region, which began in August 2019. Webcams and other data streams show no impact on the ongoing eruption at Klauea. Please be aware that aftershocks are possible and can be felt. HVO continues to monitor Hawaii’s volcanoes. Look for any changes. Alert levels/color codes remain in WATCH/ORANGE for Kīlauea and advisor/yellow for Mauna Loa at this time.”

Earthquakes in this swarm occur below the lower SW Rift in Kīlauea, below the city of Pāhala and in an area extending about 6 miles offshore. Most earthquakes occur at a depth of 15-25 miles, according to HVO. The observatory reports that earthquakes in this region have been observed at least since the 1960s.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence.
