5.9-magnitude earthquake strikes Chiba Prefecture, northwest Japan

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck northwestern Japan’s Chiba Prefecture, located east of the capital, Tokyo, Thursday evening, according to the US Geological Survey.

The Japan Meteorological Agency first recorded the size as 6.1, with an initial depth of 80 kilometers (50 miles). The quake has since been updated to a magnitude 5.9 with a depth of 62 kilometers (38.5 miles), according to the US Geological Survey.

Japan’s public broadcaster, NHK, reported several minor injuries in Chiba Prefecture.

The country’s new Prime Minister Fumio Kishida – who took office on Monday – said he had instructed officials “to do everything in their power to help the victims and prevent further harm”. Kishida added that a task force has been set up in his office to “gather information.”

Kishida said the government has asked train operators to support people who have been unable to return home, as some railways have been suspended as a result of the earthquake.

The prime minister told reporters that the last time a magnitude-5 earthquake was recorded in Tokyo’s 23 wards was on March 11, 2011, when a 9.0-magnitude earthquake hit the northeast.

The quake was felt strongly in Tokyo, according to CNN correspondents in the city.

“We have a safety alert app on our phones. The explosion started moments before the shaking saying ‘an earthquake is coming’. The shaking was really strong. It looked like the house was going to collapse,” reporter Blake Isig said.

He said picture frames, glasses and dishes fell off the walls and shelves. “You definitely got the heart pounding.”

Another CNN reporter in Tokyo, Selena Wang, said the continuous tremor lasted for more than 30 seconds. An alarm in her building urged residents to remain calm and reminded them that the building is earthquake-resistant.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said during an emergency press conference, that no anomalies were detected in the nuclear facilities following the earthquake. One is located in nearby Ibaraki Prefecture.

Tokyo Electric Power Corporation said 250 households were without power in Tokyo.

Matsuno said Thursday that the runway at Tokyo’s Haneda airport was briefly closed Thursday night following the quake. Matsuno detailed the injuries reported in the local media, describing one of them as serious, in addition to 16 minor injuries.

No tsunami warning was issued.

A decade has passed since a powerful earthquake and tsunami cut off the power supplies and cooling systems of Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant, causing the worst nuclear disaster in the country’s history.

More than 20,000 people were killed or missing and more than 100,000 others were evacuated. Authorities have spent the past 10 years cleaning up the area – a massive effort experts say would take decades to complete.
