Harnai earthquake death toll rises to 21 in Pakistan

Quetta: The death toll from Thursday’s earthquake in Harnai has risen to 21 after one of the injured succumbed to his injuries, rescue officials revealed, Saturday.

A 70-year-old man, who was injured in a house collapse, has died at the Joint Military Hospital in Quetta, according to Harnai’s deputy commissioner. “The rescue operation is almost complete, but teams are still visiting villages in remote areas.”

ISPR revealed that about 300 relief packages including tents, blankets and food have been sent to the suffering families.

The death toll in the quake is much higher than reported, Noor Muhammad Dammar, the regional minister for public health engineering and WASA, said on Friday. The number of wounded was also not reported.

Urging local and international agencies to respond immediately, he said people in the affected areas need urgent relief.

Speaking to media professionals in Quetta, he said that provincial and federal governments should intensify efforts to rehabilitate survivors and provide them with adequate financial assistance to help them repair or rebuild their homes that were destroyed or damaged in the earthquake.

Damar revealed that up to 200 homes were destroyed in floods in Harnai. “The county government has announced compensation payments to the owners of all these homes, but survivors are still waiting for compensation to be paid.”

The minister added that after frantic efforts, he was able to persuade the provincial government to pay Rs 5,000 per house.

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit Harnay on Thursday at 3 a.m. The epicenter of the earthquake was near Harnai in Balochistan and its depth was 15 km. Other tremors were also felt in other parts of the province, including Quetta, Bichen, Sibi, Muslimbagh, Kela Abdullah Sanjavi, Zob and Chaman.

The roofs of several houses in Harnay collapsed, causing the highest number of casualties. A power outage hit the area immediately after the earthquake. A state of emergency has been imposed in both private and public hospitals in the province.
