‘We can’t risk predicting anything’

One month after the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma erupted spewing hot lava and ash, Colberta Cruz, her husband, and their dog live in a small caravan in a parking lot, with no end in sight.

“I’m tired and very tired…but who are we to fight nature?” said the 56-year-old hospital kitchen worker, sitting on a camping chair.

Her husband, Tono Gonzalez, a banana grower, was pulling electrical cables and hoses to connect them to the vehicle, while her dog watches over a French bulldog. The couple had been living in the camper van for a month, constantly removing volcanic ash from the car.

“One day it explodes there, and the other a vent opens here, it’s just anguish and living in fear, waiting and praying until the explosion stops,” Cruz said. “It is a great sadness for those who lost their homes,” he added.

Streams of superheated lava have engulfed nearly 800 hectares (2,000 acres) of land, destroying nearly 2,000 buildings and many banana plantations since the eruption of the volcano on September 19. More than 6000 people were forced to leave their homes.

The eruption is unlikely to stop for at least another week, but there is no way to predict how long it will last, Carmen del Fresno of National Geographic’s volcano-monitoring division told Reuters.

“Historical records show volcanic eruptions lasting from 24 to 84 days… It would make sense to assume something within those limits, but we cannot risk (predict) anything.”
