Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was answering questions this morning about the new traffic light system that will replace New Zealand’s current warning level system when it was interrupted by an earthquake.

The 5.9-magnitude earthquake occurred during Ardern’s press conference this morning, as she outlined the country’s vaccination goals and the path behind the lockdowns.

While the reporter was asking her a question, Ardern climbed onto the stage when she started shaking.

“Ah, sorry, a slight distraction — would you mind repeating this question?” Then I told the journalist.

This is not the first time that an earthquake has interrupted the prime minister while answering reporters’ questions.

In May 2020, Ardern was speaking to the AM Show live from Parliament when a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck northwest of Levine.

“We’re seeing a little earthquake here,” she told the show’s host at the time. “Good shake here,” she added.

The shots made headlines around the world at the time.

Today’s earthquake was a 5.9 on the Richter scale, and it shook the central North Island, as many other people around the country reported feeling it.

GeoNet said it hit 30 kilometers southwest of Taumarunui and was recorded at a depth of 210 kilometers.

The earthquake was felt as far north as Auckland in the North Island, and as far south as Christchurch in the South Island.
