Four marine earthquakes struck near the Alaskan Peninsula, while melting glaciers could lead to a major tsunami this year

While a series of marine earthquakes occurred near the Gulf of Alaska this morning, scientists warned that melting glaciers in the area could lead to a large tsunami.

The first earthquake struck south of the Alaska Peninsula at 9:13 am local time (10:13 am Colombia time) today (May 20).

It struck a depth of 15 kilometers (nine miles) and its center was 186 kilometers (115 miles) southeast of Perryville, Alaska, and 825 kilometers (511 miles) southwest of Anchorage, Alaska. The U.S. Geological Survey originally mentioned it was a 4.8 magnitude earthquake before it was re-evaluated as a 4.6 seismic event.

Then a second earthquake occurred at 9:18 a.m. (10:18 a.m. BC) today (May 20), and its epicenter was 10 kilometers (six miles) 191 kilometers (119 miles) southeast of Perryville and 828 kilometers (513) Mi) southwest of Anchorage. The U.S. Geological Survey initially measured it as a 4.2-magnitude earthquake before reducing it to 4.1.

A third earthquake with a magnitude of 3.2 occurred in the same area at 11:38 am local time (12:38 pm Colombia time). The epicenter of the earthquake is 193 kilometers (120 miles) southeast of Perryville and 827 kilometers (514 miles) southwest of Anchorage.

A fourth earthquake with a magnitude of 3.0 followed by 12:54 pm. Local time (1:54 PM Colombia time), its center is 167 kilometers (104 miles) southeast of Perryville and 813 kilometers (505 miles) southwest of Anchorage.

While none of these seismic events resulted in any tsunami warnings, scientists warn that a possible landslide in Prince William Sound in Alaska could lead to a major tsunami.

Many scientists – with experience in climate change, landslides and tsunamis – signed an open letter, dated May 14, warning that the Bari glacier melts in Bari Arm, located about 97 kilometers (60 miles) east of Anchorage, that could cause a slope Unstable located in Harriman Ford.
