In slums, the situation was worse. While thousands of huts were badly damaged as their roofs and walls retreated in the face of a storm and intense rain, people took shelter in either nearby schools or in some permanent homes.

We never thought that the storm would be severe. Civil officials told us to move to the nearby school building. But since we saw Ayla and Bulbul, we thought Amfan would be the same or more powerful. But when it hit, we had nowhere to go. The school was too far. We decided to take refuge in a house close to two floors, said Sheetal, who works as a maid and lives in shacks near Anandapur in east Calcutta.

Many parts of Kolkata, including the NSCBI Airport, remained flooded. The local municipal company has not yet arrived at the damage assessment.
