Promis, Armenian Film Foundation Collaborates in Support of Cinema and Photography at UCLA

Los Angeles – The Promise Armenian Institute at UCLA Los Angeles – The Promise Armenian Institute is pleased to announce that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Armenian Film Foundation (AFF) to cooperate on a range of projects that will support Armenian cinema and photography at UCLA .

On November 18, 2021, the Promise Armenian Institute will host “Post 1988 Armenian Earthquake”, the first online exhibition of the Armenian photo archive, which will celebrate the work of Asdur Guzelian. Guzelian is a UK-based photographer who went to Armenia shortly after the earthquake in 1988. This Zoom event will show some of his photos that appeared in major newspapers at the time.

The Armenian Image Archive (AIA) is the first new collaboration between PAI and AFF. This new archive has three objectives – preservation, research, and exhibition of Armenian photographers, and photography related to the Armenian subject. The AIA will identify photographic collections throughout the world, from the mid-19th century through to contemporary collections. It will provide a repository and a continuous platform for discourse and study about Armenian photographers.

The Armenian Film Foundation was founded by J. Michael Hagopian, Ph.D., who was instrumental with the NAASR in establishing the first Chair of Armenian Studies at UCLA. Hakobian was a lecturer at the University of California before becoming a documentary director. With his legacy in mind, the Armenian Film Foundation will support projects at UCLA that connect film and photography with a deeper understanding of Armenian history, culture, and arts.

Joseph Malkian, Ph.D., an expert in early Armenian photography, works closely with the Armenian Photo Archive. As part of the Malikian Collection, Malikian has collected vintage photographs and histories of several Armenian photography studios, dating back to the 1860s, including Abdallah Freres, Sepah, Sepah and Joilier, Tarkulian (Atelier Phipus), the Iranian, Golemez Frere, Lekijian, and Krikorian, Sarrafian, Alban, Van Leo, Armand, De Mirjian, Karsh and many others. His collection contains original photos from famous Armenian photography studios in Armenia, Tbilisi, Baku, and other parts of what was formerly the Russian Empire.
