Highlanders Participate in Great ShakeOut | schools

More than 300 students at Highland Pacific Elementary School prepared for an earthquake on Thursday, October 21, by landing on the ground and crawling under their desks to stay safe.

The exercises were part of The Great California Shakeout, which included 7,633,328 participants statewide.

Principal Lauren Wilde said the school is from kindergarten through sixth grade.

Many children had never experienced a major earthquake before, so the school gave a presentation to show what an earthquake might look like and how to prepare for it.

Wilde said that younger children, as young as kindergarten, have a hard time envisioning an earthquake.

Wilde said fifteen classrooms participated, along with school staff.

What helps students make it real is that there is a recording that simulates an earthquake, with gurgling in the background.

Wilde said she gave them direction over the intercom to crawl under their desks and seek shelter for a minute.

The school then tells that it is time to evacuate, which the students practice every month during firefighting drills.

Evacuation to the black roof takes about three minutes, as they line up by class and departments and report the number of evacuees.

Wilde said she was also involved in the district report.

Next year, the school will advance to a level 4 simulator and parents will be more involved in earthquake drills.

Third grade teacher Tracey Ross said the exercises are helping her students learn to stay calm and know that everything will be fine and they should follow the plan.

“They are experts in fire drills at this point and they have done really well in these drills because of the fire drills,” Ross said. “I’m so proud of them because it’s so hard to have so many kids together and not talk.”

Last year, Wilde said they made a virtual duck and hoodie at home and that was a little more difficult. They went to hide under their dining room tables. The teachers talked with the students about the importance of not looking for shelter near the bookcase.
