Realtors eligible for earthquake rehabilitation program incentives

WEST HOLLYWOOD – The City of West Hollywood announced in a press release that owners of single-family dwellings can apply for the statewide Earthquake Brace + Bolt (EBB) incentive program developed by the California Residential Mitigation Program. The goal is to help homeowners afford seismic retrofits to their properties.

Homeowners in ZIP Codes 90046, 90048, and 90069 are eligible to apply for a limited, randomly selected number of seismic retrofit grants of up to $3,000 to help pay for costs associated with rehabilitating homes to reduce earthquake damage.

The program aims to reduce the potential for damage to their homes during an earthquake by “strengthening” the crawl space, when necessary, and “stabilizing” the foundation into the house’s frame. EBB has helped thousands of California homeowners complete their retrofits. During the 2021 program, EBB is proposing an additional supplemental grant to help low-income homeowners pay for seismic retrofitting.

Registration for the EBB program is now open. Homeowners can find participation via www.EarthquakeBraceBolt.com. Registration will be open for a limited time; Once registration ends, eligible homeowners will be selected through a random drawing, after which they will be contacted if selected, or if placed on a waiting list.

Residential earthquake retrofitting strengthens older homes, making them more resistant to damage during an earthquake. Attaching the house to its foundation improves the connection between the wooden frame and the concrete foundation. Additionally, the use of a plywood backing around the perimeter of the home’s crawl space keeps the property from tipping over on its foundation.
