Arbery trial judge: There appears to be deliberate discrimination in the selection of the jury

After a lengthy and contentious jury selection process in a coastal county in Georgia to prepare for the trial of Ahmaud Arbery, a jury of 12 people was elected on Wednesday, consisting of one black and 11 white. The jury was elected after a two-and-a-half-week selection process, with state prosecutors accusing defense attorneys of disproportionately striking qualified black jurors and basing some of their strikes on race. Judge Timothy Walmsley said the defense was discriminatory in selecting the jury, but that the case could go ahead. “This court has found that there is intentional discrimination,” Walmsley said Wednesday.
