Nicaragua earthquake: Magnitude 6.2 earthquake strikes off coast – ‘violent shaking’ panic | world | News

There has been panic across the Central American country as it has been subjected to a “violent shake” throughout last night and this morning. The EMSC Twitter account revealed the news.

Tweet on Twitter: “M6.2 #earthquake (#sismo) hit 89 km southwest of #Managua (#Nicaragua) 18 minutes ago.”

The earthquake was so strong that it shook buildings in the Costa Rican capital, San Jose.

This came after the natural phenomenon, which has a magnitude of 5.8 according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), struck off the coast of neighboring Nicaragua.

There were no initial reports of damage, according to Reuters.

“Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) which stated that the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.7.”

“Based on the initial seismic data, it is likely that several people felt the earthquake in the epicenter area,” she added.

However, she claimed, they “shouldn’t have done much damage, other than things falling off shelves, broken windows, etc.”

It struck the country just a day after its authoritarian leader Daniel Ortega appeared to be within five more years in power.

In the early hours of yesterday, Mr. Ortega, a former revolutionary who has ruled continuously since 2007, declared victory after Sunday’s vote.

Nicaragua’s Supreme Electoral Council said it had won 75 percent of the vote, with about half of the 1.3 million votes counted.

But there have been allegations of vote tampering – with US President Joe Biden calling the election an undemocratic “gesture”.

During a rare public appearance, the former Marxist commando painted the elections as a choice between peace and “terror” the opposition.

But critics said the election included a crackdown on opposition leaders and was a “hoax”.

The EU said the elections completed “the transformation of Nicaragua into an authoritarian regime”.
