5.1-magnitude earthquake strikes central Turkey
Turkey’s Disaster Management Authority announced on Monday that a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck the central Turkish province of Konya.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said the quake rocked Meram district of Konya province at 8.43 pm local time (5:43 pm GMT).
It added that it occurred at a depth of 6.82 kilometers (4.2 miles) below the surface.
On Twitter, the Konya governor’s office confirmed that no injuries have been reported so far.
“So far, nothing negative has been revealed. We continue to monitor (the area). Developments will be followed up and the public will be informed,” the statement said.
Konya Metropolitan Municipality, Ugur Ibrahim Altay, confirmed on Twitter that no loss of life due to the earthquake has been reported so far.
“Three abandoned buildings were damaged,” he added. “There was no word that anyone was stranded.”
Altay also asked people not to panic, adding that they are continuing to monitor the situation and more information will be provided.
Turkey is vulnerable to such disasters because it has active fault lines. Since 1999, it has seen more deadly earthquakes, from Van and Elazig in the east to Izmir in the west. The last major earthquake, which struck Izmir in 2020 with a magnitude of 6.6, claimed 115 lives in the Western Province.
The 1999 earthquake was a stark warning for the country to prepare for another “big earthquake” and was followed by an overhaul of building regulations and awareness campaigns. Some have reinforced their homes against potential earthquakes while the government has undertaken an ambitious “urban transformation” campaign to demolish old buildings and replace them with sturdy ones.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
