San Jose Earthquakes has appointed Chris Leach as general manager

San Jose Earthquakes have confirmed Chris Leach as their official general manager, the club confirmed Monday.

Leitch has worked as GM temporarily since July, but is now the team’s permanent pick.

He has been with the Earthquakes since 2009, first as a player before moving to a coaching position and eventually appointed as technical director in 2015. San Jose split from former general manager Jesse Fioranelli in July, and invited Leitch to lead football operations in the meantime.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this opportunity,” Leach said in a club statement.

“This club has been my family since 2009 and I am excited about the project we are doing. While the 2021 season did not end the way we wanted, we are entering an important season to rebuild and put a competitive team on the field to support our fans.”

After becoming temporary GM, Leach negotiated the mega-trade to acquire Jeremy Ibobisi of the Portland Timbers for $1.167 million in general allocation money.

The Earthquakes also replaced defender Florian Youngworth with the Vancouver Whitecaps.

“Our goal was to find a candidate with extensive knowledge in MLS, a proven track record of player development, and thoughtful use of data to make informed decisions. In addition to checking every box, Chris has been a proven leader for our club in a variety of roles over the past 13 years.”

The team finished the 2021 season in 10th place on the Western Conference table, losing in the MLS Cup playoffs.

Now, Leach faces a number of big decisions, including end-of-season contract decisions. The general manager must also determine the fate of coach Matthias Mayada, who has only one year left on his contract.

Also up for discussion is the future of designated player Eduardo “Choves” Lopez, on loan from Chivas in Liga MX. San Jose Earthquakes can choose to extend the loan for another six months or activate the purchase clause.
