According to Geoscience Australia, the earthquake occurred at 9:35 pm local time. The epicenter was in Pilbara, about 125 kilometers southeast of Port Hedland, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Within an hour, the government agency received more than a thousand reports from people who said they felt the seismic event.

An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 was initially reported, although it has since been revised to 5.3.

The Bureau of Meteorology said there was no danger of a tsunami.

Residents of the area now told Perth that they felt the ground “wasted” for a few seconds.

“It was the biggest earthquake I’ve ever felt, so it was very reasonable,” said David Paddington, manager of a bar called Last Chance Tavern in South Hedland.

“All the liquor bottles in the back bar were swaying.

“It was pretty big, and it lasted for a while.”

So far no power outages have been reported.
