An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale jolted the eastern Pilbara region of Western Australia on Saturday evening.
The earthquake was felt shortly after 9.05pm local time 7.9 kilometers east of Marble Bar, with more than 1,000 reports submitted to the Australian government’s Earth Science Tracker.
Marble Bar is a town and rock formations in the Pilbara region of northwestern Western Australia which is mostly known for its extremely hot weather.

The BBC’s correspondent took to Twitter minutes after the earthquake to confirm that a ‘medium-sized’ earthquake had hit the largely deserted area.
“A fairly large #quake in Western Australia which is somewhat unusual – but there was a 3.8 magnitude earthquake in the same area a little over a year ago.” he wrote.
Linda Howard, who lives in Pilbara, confirmed the earthquake on her Twitter account, saying it was “felt in Port Hedland, Carata, Newman, Tom Price…and every mine site in between.”
Mining, construction and exports dominate the economy of the Pilbara region through the iron ore and liquefied natural gas industries estimated to be worth more than $70 billion.
Another resident of Pilbara said it “lasted for about 30 seconds” and consisted of a “low gurgle”.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology confirmed that the quake did not trigger a tsunami warning.
In September, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake shook Melbourne and destroyed part of the Betty Burgers restaurant in the city’s famous Chapel Street – where the tremors are felt by residents living as far away as Sydney, South Australia and Tasmania.
