Western Australia earthquake: Hedland Harbor residents shaken by 5.3 magnitude earthquake

Thousands of residents of a western Australian town were shocked by the earthquake, which was said to have “lasted for 20 seconds”.

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck western Australia on Saturday evening.

The earthquake struck the second largest city in Port Hedland in the Pilbara region, with a population of less than 15,000, around 9 p.m. (local time).

Locals reported a “roar” of the ground for at least 20 seconds.

“Really felt in Port Hedland, rattling sound and the earth moved for us. Now the power is out,” one person wrote on Facebook.

Local bar manager Last Chance Tavern, David Paddington, said the quake lasted for 20 seconds and that “beer tap lines are swaying.”

“It was the biggest earthquake I’ve ever felt in my life, so it was very reasonable,” he told Perth now.

“All the liquor bottles in the back were swaying. It was pretty big, and it lasted for a while.”

Residents living 500 kilometers inside Port Hedland reported that the ground was shaking.

Locals in Tom Price, Newman and Karratha used social media to share their experience that left many “shaking”.

“The ceiling, the walls and the windows are all rattling,” said one resident Tom Price. “It shook.”

Another said it “felt like a train was passing by”.

It was also felt by Geraldton and Lismordy.

While workers at Rio Tinto at the West Angelas mine and BHP Jimblebar mine described the feeling of the earthquake.

GeoScience Australia said more than 900 earthquake reports have been reported.

The volcano discovery said the quake struck about 17 kilometers from Marble Bar at a “shallow depth” of 10 kilometres.

“Shallow earthquakes are more strongly felt by people than deep earthquakes because they are closer to the surface,” her website says.

An earthquake of this magnitude can cause “light to moderate” damage.

But there were no reports of damage at this point.

Western Power has not reported any power outages in the area yet.

The last time Western Australia was hit by an earthquake was in Lake Muir in 2018, when a 5.7-magnitude earthquake occurred in South Western Australia.

It was followed by a 4.7 earthquake in October and a 5.4 earthquake in November.

A number of buildings were damaged in Victoria in late September after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake occurred near Mansfield, about 190 kilometers from Melbourne.

The earthquake was felt throughout Victoria, Canberra and even parts of New South Wales, including Sydney.
