People flee their homes after earthquakes hit southern Iran, killing at least one – state TV

DUBAI (Reuters) – Two strong earthquakes struck southern Iran near the port of Bandar Abbas on Sunday, state television said, prompting residents to flee their homes and killing at least one person.

State television said the quakes, with a magnitude of 6.3 and 6.4, struck Hormozgan province, and the quake was felt across the Gulf in Dubai.

Iranian state television, quoting local officials, said that “a person died after an electricity pole fell on him.”

Iran intersects with major geological fault lines and has suffered several devastating earthquakes in recent years.

The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center put the strength of one of the earthquakes at 6.5 at a relatively shallow depth of 10 km (6 miles).

“The earthquake was felt in several cities in southern Iran in Hormozgan province,” an official told state television, adding that rescue teams had been sent to the area.

State television showed footage of residents in Bandar Abbas fleeing their homes in panic. The official IRNA news agency said there were no structural damages to homes in the area.

The earthquake was also felt across the Gulf in Dubai, according to some residents.

“I felt it on the northern and eastern side of the United Arab Emirates without any effect,” the UAE National Center of Meteorology said in a tweet.
