Two earthquakes were reported in southern Iran, 6.2 and 6.7 on the Richter scale, mild tremors were felt in parts of the UAE including Dubai and Sharjah

Dubai: Many residents of the UAE felt slight tremors on the evening of Sunday, November 14, as the National Center of Meteorology recorded an earthquake in southern Iran, measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale at 4.07 pm.

In a later update, NCM said: “Another earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale was recorded in southern Iran at 4:08 pm UAE time, according to NCM’s National Earthquake Network.”

A spokesperson for NCM told Gulf News, “National Earthquake Network, recorded two earthquakes today, Sunday 14/11/2021, in the same place (southern Iran) with a 6.2 and 6.7 earthquake on the Richter scale, at 16:07 and 16:08 respectively. “Emirates time”, at the same depth of 10 km, and a distance of 200 km north of the city of Ras al-Khaimah. It is slightly felt by residents of the United Arab Emirates without any effect.

“The cause of the earthquake is the tectonic movement on the Zagros mountain belt in southern Iran”.

According to Emirati geologists, earthquake risks are slightly higher in the northern and eastern parts of the Emirates due to their proximity to the Iranian fault line.

Several UAE residents also reported that they felt slight tremors from the two earthquakes.

Gulf News reader Faisal Khan, who was in his home in Abu Shagara, Sharjah at the time, said: “Everything in the house was shaking including the hanging lights. We left the building and half of the residents were already out.”

“I was at home and saw the water inside the water dispenser moving a little bit and realized there might have been an earthquake,” said Shruti Sharma, another reader who resides in Al Barsha, Dubai.

Sangeeta Mangalani, who lives in Bur Dubai, told Gulf News, “It was around 4pm and my husband and I were having tea in the house. Suddenly the chairs in the house and the bed shook. My daughter who was working in the other room came. She came out and said her bed is moving too. This lasted for about eight to 10 minutes.”
