UK earthquake: Houses shake as 3.1 magnitude earthquake wakes residents at 2am

A 3.1-magnitude earthquake hit an area in Scotland, northwest of Glasgow, with locals reporting house shaking and tremors.

Stunned residents took to social media to report the unrest in the early hours, just before 2 a.m. Tuesday.

The epicenter of the earthquake is believed to have been near the town of Lochgilphead and is believed to have a magnitude of 3.1 on the Richter scale.

Residents nearby said their homes shook during the quake.

Someone said, “Nothing shakes you like an earthquake. This is the biggest earthquake I’ve ever felt. The whole house shook.”

They added, “I’m on Tarbert Argyle. I’ve never felt one this big, everything in my room shook.”

Another said: “The Argyll earthquake occurred about 7km from Lochgilphead and was felt widely across Argyllshire. It’s likely a magnitude of 4.2 which would make sense for the duration of the reporter.”

One person on social media said they woke up with ‘shaking and rattling’, while another person said it was felt widely across the region, including Oban, Inviari and Tarbert.

The US Geological Survey says the quake was 10 km deep and 3.1 km deep.

It is said to have struck at 1.44 a.m. about 11 miles northwest of Lochgilphead.

The latest earthquake in the UK comes a month after the one that was felt in North Wales.

People in Snowdonia were interrupted Sunday night by the earthquake, which caused a “big rattling sound”.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed that the area was hit by a small earthquake measuring 1.0 on the Richter scale.
