A major British earthquake shook homes and forced residents to wake up at 2 am

A major earthquake shook homes and woke people up in Scotland, with locals reporting dangerous tremors.

It registered 3.1 on the Richter scale and caused widespread unrest around 2 am on Tuesday.

The epicenter is believed to be near the town of Lochgelvid, northwest of Glasgow in Argyll, and shaking was also reported in Oban, Inveraray and Tarbert.

Residents nearby said their homes shook during the quake, reports The Mirror.

Someone said, “I’m on Tarbert Argyle. I’ve never felt anyone this big, everything in my room shook.”

Another said: “The Argyll earthquake occurred about 7 km from Lochgilphead and was felt widely across Argyllshire. A potential magnitude of 4.2 would make sense for the duration reported.”

One person on social media said they were woken up by “shaking and panicking” while another said it was being felt widely across the area.

The US Geological Survey says the quake was 10 km deep and had a magnitude of 3.1.

It is said to have struck at 1.44 a.m. about 11 miles northwest of Lochgilphead.

The latest earthquake in the UK comes a month after the one that was felt in North Wales.

The earthquake was felt in several towns northwest of Glasgow

The British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed that Snowdonia was hit by a small earthquake measuring 1.0 on the Richter scale.

Also in September last year, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, was hit by three earthquakes in just two weeks as part of a “swarm” of earthquakes.

A 3.0-magnitude earthquake in the city sparked a wave of questions from anxious residents about the cause of the town’s tremors.

According to the British Geological Survey, between 200 and 300 earthquakes are detected in the UK each year.

According to experts, earthquakes greater than 5.0 degrees occur on average every eight years.

The largest earthquake ever recorded in the UK occurred in 1931, when a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck offshore 120 kilometers northeast of Great Yarmouth.
