Scientists seem to have discovered the source of two major earthquakes – a fracture of a tectonic plate slowly breaking apart, according to LiveScience reports. A new study says that two massive undersea earthquakes near Indonesia, with a magnitude of 8.6 and 8.2, may have been caused by the separation of the India-Australia plate – the Capricorn in the Indian Ocean. The fracture expands by about 0.06 inches a year and will be tilted up in a somewhat short time, geologically – about a million years from now. “It is not a fast-moving structure, but it is still important compared to the other limits of the planet,” says co-author Aureli Kodorier Keror of the Earth Physics Institute in Paris. The earthquakes occurred on April 11, 2012, and they had two important impacts.

First, they raised unfulfilled tsunami warnings. Second, they revived the controversy about a possible break in the India-Australia-Capricorn painting, by Eos.
