Yorkshiremen have reported hearing a loud sound and feeling the ground moving. Residents from Brotton, Redcar, Cleveland, Pickering and Skelton all reported feeling the ground move Wednesday afternoon. A user named AP_82 tweeted: “An earthquake was felt in Pickering, Yorkshire.”

Oliver Findlay said: “It was either an earthquake or an underground explosion from the Bowlby mine at the time.

Yorkshire Live reported that the quake occurred at 3.45pm.

John Ryan also said: “I think we just had an earthquake in Wilburn, North Yorkshire!”

The British Geological Survey (BGS) claimed that the accident was a sonic boom, not an earthquake.

They reported: “BGS has received a number of reports from residents in North Yorkshire who reported an event at approximately 15:50 UTC today.

“Data from BGS seismic networks in the area were examined and signals corresponding to a potential audio source were recorded between 15:47:42 and 15:49:23 UTC at several stations, on the BGS seismic network, in North Yorkshire.”

The second earthquake struck Roybridge at 2.32 am and had a magnitude of 1.6.

Another earthquake was also reported at 1.44 a.m. and struck Lochgilphead in Argyll.

Victoria Winters, 53, of Argyle, said the sounds were like “a freight train.”

She said, “We woke up a little bit from the start. It looks like a freight train suddenly appeared and then started shaking.”

“It looks like something really big is rushing towards you. I live in a big old stone house, so it makes a lot of noise when it comes.

“It’s not the first time I’ve tested one here, so I knew what it was. I can imagine if you haven’t tried it before, it can be pretty scary.

“I’ve felt about four in the past ten years.
