Experts say the ‘earthquake’ was suspected to be a ‘sound event’ as residents reported shaking homes

Home tremors, shaky windows and tremors were felt in the aftermath of the “quake”, which experts later said was a “sound event”.

The British Geological Society said it initially received reports of a possible earthquake at around 3.50pm on Wednesday (November 17).

But after analysis, seismologists decided it was the result of sound, not motions in the ground.

There were reports of “earthquake” from York and around North Yorkshire and parts of Lincolnshire.

Dr Amy Jane Bear, a resident, wrote on Twitter: “Feels in the air and all through our bodies near Castle Howard.

“The children froze, the dog ran for her life. The former is now cheerful, the latter is hiding under my bed.”

A Whitby councilman said he “sees the windows shaking”.

“The house shook, I watched the windows shake… It looked like something heavy was falling into the house next door,” Philip Trumper told the Palestinian News Agency.

“I think it (could) have been a sonic boom,” added the 48-year-old.

On Twitter, BGS said: “BGS has received a number of reports from residents in North Yorkshire who reported an event at approximately 15:50 UTC today.

Reports described “house shaking and the greenhouse creaking”, “a low rumble ending in a stroke”, “windows shaking”, and “feeling the floor trembling”.

“Data from BGS seismic networks in the area were examined and signals corresponding to a potential audio source were recorded between 15:47:42 and 15:49:23 UTC at several stations, on the BGS seismic network, in North Yorkshire.

“Reports received are also consistent with historical notes received for prior events of audio origin.”

The origin of the phenomenon is currently unknown and BGS said it was unable to comment on the audio events.
